Gunman Shoots, Kills Guard At Holocaust ...

On June 10, 2009, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., became the site of a tragic act of violence when an 88-year-old white supremacist opened fire inside the museum, resulting in the death of a security guard and leaving the nation in shock.

At approximately 12:49 p.m., James W. von Brunn, a known Holocaust denier and white supremacist, entered the museum through the 14th Street entrance. As he approached the door, Museum Special Police Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, a six-year veteran of the museum's security staff, opened it for him. Without warning, von Brunn raised a .22-caliber rifle and shot Officer Johns in the upper torso. Officer Johns later succumbed to his injuries at the George Washington University Hospital.

n response, two other museum securities officers, Harry Weeks and Jason "Mac" McCuiston, exchanged gunfire with von Brunn, wounding him in the face. The entire incident unfolded in approximately two minutes, with a total of 11 shots fired—three from von Brunn and eight from the officers.

James W. von Brunn was a St. Louis native with a history of extremist views. He had previously been convicted in 1983 for attempting to kidnap members of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board. His online writings included anti-Semitic content, and he operated a website called "The Holy Western Empire," where he espoused racist and anti-Semitic ideologies.
